What Does Ranked Choice Voting Mean?

In Minneapolis, ranked-choice voting (RCV) allows voters to rank up to three candidates in order of preference for local offices, such as mayor and city council. This system is used instead of a traditional single-choice election. On your ballot, you will see columns for "1st Choice," "2nd Choice," and "3rd Choice" for each office. You are not required to rank more than one, but ranking multiple candidates ensures your vote can still count even if your top choice is eliminated. Ranking multiple candidates does not weaken your support for your first choice. Your vote will only go to your second choice if your first choice is eliminated. Therefore, we highly encourage you to rank multiple candidates.
